KYL/D THEME SERIES #2: space

Rehearsal Shot

Last week I started the three week blog series on the three key elements of KYL/D. These elements are time, space, and energy. Check out last week’s blog post to see what I had to say about KYL/D’s relationship with time, and keep reading to see what I have to say about KYL/D’s relationship with space.

KYL/D has 11 dance artists. Although 11 is a relatively small number, it sometimes seems as though there are 20+ dancers on the stage. This is because the dancers have a strong sense of space and body awareness. The dancers know how to travel, perform, and present themselves to an audience. Another reason why there appears to be more dancers than there actually are, is because of Lin’s amazing ability to choreograph in such a way that as much space as possible is being taken up.

Space is also a key element of the reason why I find KYL/D’s dancers to be so unique, their ability to consume the space is truly mesmerizing to watch. At any given time, there is something extraordinary happening with the space and the ways the dancers use it. The dancer’s use of space helps the dancers look very long and tall, as well as incredibly strong and fierce. Truly becoming one with the space around you is a key part of learning to dance and embody a piece of choreography. When used correctly, space can become a dancer’s best friend.
